These easy Chocolate Hand Pies are made with flaky pie crust filled with creamy Nutella and gooey melted candy bars and drizzled with even more chocolate for a super decadent treat that bakes in about 10 minutes. Perfect for Valentine's Day, birthday parties, or anytime you need a chocolate fix.

These little chocolate pies are such a fun treat -- and so easy to make with store-bought pie crust, Nutella, and chopped chocolate bars. We love to fill these with Ghirardelli caramel squares or Caramellos and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups for the ooey-est, gooey-est chocolate filling. But you can use any kind of candy bar you like (I do suggest you go with something gooey!), chocolate chips or just go straight-up Nutella. .

🍫Ingredients
See recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full list of ingredients and exact amounts.

- Pie dough. I use store-bought pie dough rounds from the grocery store. Of course, you can use your favorite homemade crust.
- Nutella. Creamy Nutella, a delicious chocolate hazelnut spread, is just the first level of chocolate. There are 2 more!
- Chocolate bars. Top the Nutella with chopped chocolate bars. Our favorites are assorted Ghirardelli caramel squares (white, dark, and milk chocolate), Caramellos, and Reese's Peanut Butter cups. You can use any kind you like, but I suggest going with something gooey!
- Egg. Beaten egg mixed with water creates an eggwash that serves as the glue to hold the pie crusts together and give the top a lovely golden brown color.
- Cinnamon sugar. A sprinkle of cinnamon sugar on the pie crust adds a little crunch and flavor.
- Dark chocolate chips. Drizzle melted chocolate over the baked pies for the third installment of chocolate.
🍓Substitutions or Variations
- Swap the Nutella for peanut butter.
- Skip the candy bars and add another spoonful of Nutella, chocolate chips, or chopped chocolate bars.
- Sprinkle the tops with regular granulated sugar or turbinado sugar.
- Add a drizzle of melted Nutella or melted peanut butter on top of the pies.
- Dip the pies in melted Nutella (yum!)
- Instead of a chocolate drizzle, dust the tops of the pies with powdered sugar.
- Add a fruity twist with a little strawberry or raspberry jam or fruit pie filling. See these Blueberry Hand Pies and Heart-Shaped Mini Strawberry Hand Pies for more flavor inspo!
🥣Instructions

Step 1: Cut pie dough into shapes with a cookie cutter. Place half of the dough cut outs on a parchment-lined baking sheet pan. Spread Nutella into the center of each one and place chopped chocolate bars on top of the Nutella. Add flaky salt, if desired.

Step 2: Beat the egg with a little water, then brush the edges of the dough with the eggwash. Place the top crust on each one. Use the tines of a fork to crimp and seal the top and bottom pie crusts together. Brush the top of each chocolate pie with a little egg wash, then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Use a sharp paring knife to cut vent holes into the top crust.

Step 3: Bake in preheated oven at 425 for 10-13 minutes until the crust is golden brown. Do not overbake or the pies will be dry. Place on a wire rack to cool 10-15 minutes.

Step 4: Melt chocolate and a little oil in the microwave until smooth. Drizzle chocolate on top of each pie.
👉Top Tip: Be careful not to fill the pies too full, or the filling will burst through the crust.

☑️Tips
- Use gooey candy bars for the filling -- you won't regret it!
- Skip the candy bars and fill the chocolate hand pies with all Nutella or Nutella and chocolate chips or chopped chocolate.
- Instead of drizzling with melted chocolate, serve with melted Nutella.
🎁Storage
Store chocolate hand pies in an airtight container at room temperature for a couple of days or in the refrigerator for one week. Freeze baked chocolate pies in a ziploc bag. Thaw in the refrigerator and serve at room temperature.
❓FAQs
Yes, of course! Make your own homemade fruit hand pies by filling them with store-bought or homemade apple, blueberry, cherry, or strawberry pie filling. Or try your favorite flavor of jam and a little cream cheese or lemon curd.
To keep hand pies from bursting open during baking and leaking all over the pan, be careful not to add too much filling, leave a border around the bottom crust so you have plenty of room to seal the tops and bottoms together, use an egg wash as a glue, and crimp the pie crusts around the edges with a fork.

Chocolate Hand Pies
Ingredients
- 2 9" pie dough rounds (store-bought or homemade)
- ½ cup Nutella
- 12-16 mini chocolate bars, chopped into ½-3/4" pieces Ghirardelli squares, Reese's peanut butter cups, Caramello bars, or other gooey chocolate bars
- 1 beaten egg
- flaky salt
Toppings
- 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ cup chocolate chips
- ½ teaspoon vegetable oil
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water to make an egg wash. Set aside. Combine the cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl, set aside.
- Roll out pie dough rounds onto parchment paper or lightly floured surface. Cut the dough with 2-inch cookie cutters, re-rolling and cutting the scraps. You should get about 32 cut-outs.
- Place cut-outs onto prepared baking sheet. Spread 1 teaspoon Nutella onto the center of each cut-out, leaving a border. Arrange 3-4 chocolate bar pieces on top of the Nutella and sprinkle with a little sea salt, if desired. Brush egg wash onto the edges of the bottom pie crust.
- Place a top crust onto each one (stretch it a little bit, if necessary) and press down around the edges. Use a fork to crimp and seal the top crust to the bottom crust. Brush the top of the hand pies with egg wash. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top of the pie crust. Cut vents into the top crust with a sharp paring knife.
- Bake for 10-14 minutes or until the pie crust is golden brown. Do not overbake or the pies will be dry. Transfer the chocolate hand pies to a wire baking rack to cool for 10-15 minutes.
- Melt the chocolate and oil in the microwave for 30 seconds or until smooth. Drizzle the melted chocolate on top of the pies. Serve warm.
