This sweet maple glaze recipe is a fast, easy recipe that elevates even the simplest cakes and cookies into warm, cozy fall desserts. It's by far one of my favorite glazes and a great way to dress up these brown sugar shortbread cut-out cookies, pumpkin bundt cake, and apple coffee cake. And it's such a simple recipe, I bet you already have the ingredients.
🍁Ingredients
See recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full list of ingredients and exact amounts.
- Real maple syrup. Be sure to use the good stuff! High-grade maple syrup adds the richest, most natural maple flavoring. You can boost the flavor with a little maple extract -- start small and add to taste. Pancake syrup tastes more artificial and won't give it that same sweet maple syrup flavor.
- Cinnamon. Cinnamon is an optional ingredient, but just a little bit really enhances the maple flavor.
- Butter. Adding butter to any powdered sugar icing gives it a richer flavor and a silkier, more luxurious texture. I use unsalted butter, but if you use salted butter, adjust the salt to taste.
🥣How to Make Maple Icing
Step 1: Melt butter in the microwave or a small saucepan over medium heat. In a small mixing bowl, stir the confectioners' sugar, cinnamon (if using), and a pinch of salt. Add the maple syrup, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Stir until smooth.
Step 2: Immediately drizzle over coffee cake, donuts, carrot cake, cookies, breads, muffins ... you name it. You can also dip the tops of cookies right in the glaze (you may need to warm up the glaze a bit first to thin it out a bit). spread a thick layer of maple syrup frosting Set glazed items aside for a few hours until they dry to a firm finish -- may take a few hours.
☑️Tips
- This recipe yields about ¾ cup of maple icing.
- If the icing develops a crust while you're still using it, just give it a good stir.
- For a thinner consistency without adding more liquid, warm it in the microwave in 5-10 second increments. For a thicker consistency, let it cool.
🎁Storage
Store leftover glaze in an airtight container in the refrigerator for one week. Before using, bring to room temperature or, to speed it up, warm it in 5-10 second increments in the microwave until thin enough to drizzle.
