Is a Smoothie Bowl Just a Smoothie ... In a Bowl?
Wondering What is a smoothie bowl? Isn't it just a smoothie? Well, kind of. The difference between a smoothie and a smoothie bowl is the texture and toppings. Smoothies are typically served in a cup and can be drunk through a straw. Smoothie bowls have a thick consistency, like soft-serve ice cream, and are eaten with a spoon.
The best part about smoothie bowls is that you can pile on the fun toppings! Create a delicious smoothie bowl sundae with fresh fruit, nuts, chocolate chips, crushed graham crackers—whatever you like!
🍓Ingredients
See recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full list of ingredients and exact amounts.
- Frozen strawberries. Frozen fruit is the trick to making a thick smoothie bowl without watering it down with ice cubes. You can use pre-packaged frozen strawberries from the store or freeze your own.
- Frozen ripe bananas. Frozen bananas help create a thick and creamy smoothie bowl. For the best flavor, freeze bananas at the perfect eating ripeness. Just peel, slice, and throw them in a ziplock bag.
- Plain Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt helps create a smooth, creamy texture. You can also use strawberry, vanilla, or your favorite flavor of Greek yogurt.
- Toppings. Your toppings options are endless. This one has fresh strawberries, crushed graham crackers, mini chocolate chips, almonds, and a honey-cocoa drizzle (so yummy!).
- High-speed blender. You'll need a good blender or food processor with enough power to puree frozen fruit into a smooth, creamy smoothie bowl. I use a Ninja blender or Cuisinart food processor.
🫐Variations
- Replace all or some of the strawberries with any kind of frozen fruit like blueberries, peaches, mango, raspberries, or a mixture.
- Substitute bananas with mangoes to add tropical flavor while keeping the texture thick and creamy. Avocadoes are another great option.
- Add a scoop or two of protein powder or peanut powder.
- Sprinkle in some seasonings like cinnamon, cardamom, or ginger.
🥣How to Make a Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl
Step 1: Add the frozen banana, strawberries, and Greek yogurt to a food processor or high-powered blender. Process until smooth and creamy. You will have to stop and scrape down the sides of the blender several times.
Step 2: Pour the strawberry and banana mixture into a bowl and top with the rest of the Greek yogurt (this swirl is added for flavor!)
Step 3: Concoct your perfect smoothie bowl creation with the toppings of your choice -- sliced fresh fruit, toasted nuts, chocolate chips, crushed graham crackers ... anything!
Step 4: To make the honey-cocoa drizzle, mix honey, cocoa powder, and a little warm water until it reaches your desired consistency. Drizzle it all over your strawberry smoothie bowl, then lick the spoon!
👉Top Tip: Let strawberries thaw at room temperature for about 5-10 minutes. They’ll blend easier and more quickly when partially thawed.
🍯Best Smoothie Bowl Toppings
- Fresh fruit. Bananas, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, cherries, kiwi
- Nuts and seeds. Almonds, pecans, pistachios, cashews, walnuts, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, coconut flakes, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds
- Sweet, crunchy stuff. Graham crackers, cookies, cereal, granola, chocolate chips
- Drizzle. Honey, agave nectar, maple syrup, almond butter
☑️Tips
- To prepare bananas for freezing, peel, slice, and place them in a large zip-top bag. Lay the bag flat in the freezer with the bananas in a single layer.
- For a thinner consistency, add a little liquid -- regular milk or your non-dairy milk of choice like almond milk or oat milk, or even orange juice for more fruity flavor.
- For the best soft-serve consistency, enjoy your smoothie bowl right away. It will freeze much firmer than ice cream, so if you make it ahead and freeze it, set it on the counter for 10-20 minutes before digging in.

Honey Cocoa Drizzle
- 2 teaspoons cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon honey
Topping Ideas
- strawberry slices, graham cracker crumbs, sliced almonds, mini chocolate chips
Instructions
- Thaw strawberries at room temperature for 5-10 minutes. Place strawberries, banana slices, and ¼ cup Greek yogurt in a food processor or high-speed blender. Process until smooth and creamy. You will have to stop and scrape down the sides several times.
- Pour the strawberry banana mixture into a bowl and swirl with the remaining Greek yogurt.
- Top with fresh fruit, toasted nuts, chocolate chips, and crushed graham crackers.
- Stir the cocoa powder and honey together and drizzle on top.
Notes
- Thawing the strawberries for a few minutes helps them blend easier and more quickly.
